This morning I let Bugs run arond the living room while I cleaned his cage. Katie took a compact disk and pretended it was a camera: she looked through the hole at Bugs and said to the rabbit "Smile!" and "1...2...3". Grandma and Grandpa Penny have arrived in town, they have met Katie for the first time, and they are getting along well.
We have already blogged about our adventures on January 16, 2010, with the visit to the bird and flower market in Guiyang, but here are some selcted pictures from that day:
-Tea leaves
-Cool penjing/penzai/bonsai trees, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penzai.
-Assorted mystery items. The berrylike items in the woven basket in the front make a sort of shampoo when mixed with water.
-A fish tank made up to look like terraced farmland, making the fish school look to me like a flock of birds.
-A poodle in the dog area that had its hair cut and dyed to look like an angel. All the dogs we saw for sale were for pets, though we heard sometimes there were some special breeds sold for eating. There are people who do not like that practice and want to ban it in China.

-Walnuts were popular at the market.
-Some interesting Chinese signage, with several things to note: 1) Typo in English, they were more abundant that I expected in China. 2) Use of metric system. 3) The "no horn" icon. People used their horns a lot when driving, and our driver was no exception. 4) The "entrance" and "exit" characters were one of the few I feel that I have learned, since they were all over the place and they looked like a pair of legs walking toward an entrance door and a headless person running toward an exit door (which amuses me). My favorite sign in China was in Beijing...the don't drink and drive sign that showed a cartoon of a car with a booze bottle in its mouth (never got a pic of that).
-People spinning tops in a park by whipping them. Kris tried it with some success. We had never seen this before, though the practice dates back a few centuries around the world (Shakespeare made reference to it I guess.)
-Spring festival (Chinese New Year) decoration at the hotel. Note the flower blossoms, the red envelopes, the red streamers, and the miniature oranges.
